Documented history
The Vivarium is associated with Cassiodoro and his vision of a community in which study, work and contemplation formed part of the same system. Copying ancient texts existed alongside agriculture, water management, fish farming and meditation.
This tappa makes it possible to read the landscape as a whole: the coast, the Vasche, San Martino and the conceptual connection with the complex on the hillside. It is not a single monument, but a form of cultural and territorial organisation.
Documented history
The basins cut into the granite rock are among the most recognisable features of the Cassiodoran landscape. They are associated with the use of coastal waters and the productive organisation of the Vivarium.
Observing them helps explain how practical knowledge and community life came together: the sea was not only a view, but part of a system of food provision, study and resource management.
Landscape and nature
The coast between Copanello and Caminia brings together granite cliffs, bays, Mediterranean vegetation and seabeds of great value. The archaeological landscape of the Vivarium is therefore inseparable from its marine environment.
Rock faces, recesses and submerged meadows support biodiversity and make the relationship between the history of settlement and the natural shape of the coast clearly visible.
